An established telecommunication infrastructure service provider with a national footprint is looking to employ a GIS Product & Application Specialist to join their Gauteng, Cape Town or Durban based teams on a permanent basis.

The Applications Specialist is responsible for the application and software value chain, in order to provide product solutions for specific business needs. This role requires the management of the entire process of building applications, from the design and creation process, to testing, rolling out the application and 3rd line support for applications used with DBS.

GIS Product experience in Telco, IT, Business Analysis and Project Management will be important to successfully deliver the objectives of this role.

Salary – R30k to R45k/month, negotiable and dependent on skills and experience.

Location – Centurion (Gauteng), Cape Town or Durban Offices

Knowledge, qualifications and experience

  • B-Degree in Geomatics, Information Technology, Engineering or related field
  • ITIL Certification – compulsory (Practitioner level or above preferred)
  • At least 2 certifications in your area of specialisation and/or general IT Applications (application specialists are expected to be experts in several computer programs and data interfaces)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in IT Infrastructure and/ or IT Support
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of Information Technology Systems and Infrastructure
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IT Core Processes
  • Have the willingness and ability to learn other areas of specialisation within the IT Applications field
  • Solid understanding of ESRI server and web products.


  • Collaborate with a team to design a product solution in line with specifications, implementing the software and taking it live
  • Make recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and delivery of services through the use of technology and best practice methodologies
  • Provide specialist advice, guidance and support regarding technical infrastructure, systems, networks, specific development toolsets, etc.
  • Work with other Specialists and teams as required to collaborate on solutions within their specialisation to ensure fit within the DBS strategic direction
  • Ensure IT requirements are met and service quality is maintained when introducing new services, also considering the cost effectiveness of proposed solution(s)
  • Collaborate on the development of and/or review of standards, documentation and methods of working in the relevant area of expertise
  • Provide 3rd line support services for users, by solving escalated incidents and problems
  • Monitor, preventatively identify report and resolve incidents and problems that could hinder system performance
  • Monitor and manage the performance of GIS related software and resolve incidents and problems within agreed SLA’s/ OLA’s
  • Manage the deliverables of 3rd Party GIS vendors, ensuring they meet agreed performance standards and contribute to value-adding partnerships that produce collaborative work products
  • Manage services available in GIS by sourcing for the best fit-for-purpose GIS software ensuring an application fit infrastructure, also performing audits and keeping record of GIS software licences
  • Ensure users have correct access levels and enforce the necessary security policies
  • Drive innovative solutions to reduce costs within Operational Delivery Services and the broader DBS where possible; e.g. automation
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards to better the efficiency of your work
  • Access software updates, drivers, knowledge bases, and frequently asked questions resources on the Internet to aid in problem resolution
  • Expand IT Technical capabilities by obtaining certifications match to changing information and technology needs of the organisation
